CERN tests IBM virtualization software
IBM and CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, announced that IBM's storage virtualization software achieved positive performance results in an internal data challenge. The data challenge was part of a test at CERN to simulate the computing needs of the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid, the largest scientific computing grid in the world. Using IBM TotalStorage SAN File System storage virtualization software, the internal tests beat performance records by reading and writing data to disk at rates of 1 GBps for a total I/O of over 1 petabyte (1 million GBs) in a 13-day period, IBM said.

CentricStor refreshes virtual tape system
CentricStor Version 3.1, a virtual tape system developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, has been introduced with a new cache-mirroring function and volume sizes configurable up to 200 GB. With the new cache-mirroring function, data can be transferred synchronously to a secondary site over 2 Gbit Fibre Channel connections. CentricStor Version 3.1 is available in the U.S. from distributor PeakData Inc., a Colorado-based storage solutions provider, and PeakData's resellers.
