Partnering with hard disk drive manufacturers Fujitsu, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Seagate Technology, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) has announced that it will deploy 2.5-inch 10K rpm hard disk drives in its ProLiant family of servers, as well as its entry-level HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array offerings, leaving behind the older and lesser performing 3.5-inch, 10K rpm drives. Robert Walker, a career finance and operations executive, has been appointed to Brocade Communications System Inc.'s board of directors. Before his retirement in 2001, Walker was chief financial officer at Agilent Technologies from 1999 to 2001. Prior to that position, Walker worked at HP for 24 years in a wide variety of positions, including controller, business manager for U.S. field operations and executive in charge of HP's information technology function. The three University of California institutions involved in the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research project all rely on the Panasas Inc.'s ActiveScale Storage Cluster, the company announced today. As part of a team designing next generation drugs by analyzing the behavior of protein molecules, researchers at the Universities of California at San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Berkeley report seeing 5X improved application performance from the Panasas storage.
